The Haldi function, also known as the Haldi ceremony or Haldi rasam, is a significant pre-wedding ritual in Indian weddings. "Haldi" refers to turmeric powder, which is considered auspicious in Hindu traditions and is believed to have several skincare benefits. The Haldi ceremony typically takes place a day or two before the wedding day. It involves applying a paste made of turmeric, sandalwood, rose water, and other natural ingredients on the bride and groom's bodies. The paste is often prepared by close family members and friends, who come together to celebrate and bless the couple.
During the ceremony, family members and friends take turns applying the Haldi paste on the bride and groom's face, hands, and feet. The paste is often smeared generously to ensure maximum benefits. Sometimes, the family members playfully apply the paste on each other as well, creating a joyous and festive atmosphere. After the application of the Haldi paste, the bride and groom usually leave it on their bodies for some time to let it dry. Once it dries, it is traditionally washed off with water, usually by taking a ceremonial bath.
